Children with ADHD

If a child shows six or more symptoms of ADHD then ADHD is diagnosed in the child. If there is inactivity or hyperactivity of such symptoms on regular basis for more than six months in two or more settings then also ADHD is detected. There is no single test that is available for ADHD.

There are standard guidelines by using them a physician can diagnose ADHD. This mainly involves gathering of information from various sources, these sources may be the school, parents or other caretakers. The doctors basically combine this information and then form a report on basis of such diagnosis.

How do you diagnose ADHD?

A primary care doctor of your child can also determine whether your child has ADHD or not. This can be done by following the strict guidelines that are developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. These guidelines can be followed to measure a child of age between 6 to 12 years. Determining or diagnosing ADHD in child before age of 5 years is really a tough job. These children tend to show the ADHD symptoms in different situations. Also children change their behavior very rapidly in preschool days, this is also a common reason why it become difficult to diagnose such disorders.

In teenagers too diagnosing ADHD becomes very tough.

ADHD types in children.

b) Hyperactive type or impulsive type: in this type of ADHD in children, child is able to pay attention and show both the hyperactive and impulsive behaviors.

c) Inattentive type: this was earlier known as attention deficit disorder (ADD) children suffering from this are not overly active. Their symptoms sometimes go unnoticed.

Treatment of ADHD in children:

There are special education program that are required to educate the child’s family so they are able to cope up with the child. The parents should discuss all the options and even tell every symptom that is related and necessary for the doctor to detect ADHD in children. This may provide your child with the best possible medication and treatment.

According to various studies long term treatment with proper combination of medication and behavioral therapy is one of the most superior therapies for ADHD in children. Only medicinal or other specific treatments are not considered superior in accordance to long term therapy for ADHD in children.
